Overview
Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife areas. Formed by a collapsed volcano, the caldera holds a natural “bowl” of plains, swamps, and woodland where animals live all year thanks to permanent water and grazing.
As you descend from the crater rim—around 600 meters down—you enter a world packed with lions, buffalo, elephants, hyenas, zebras, wildebeest, and rare black rhinos. It’s one of the best places in Tanzania to see many species in a single day.
Ngorongoro fits perfectly into a classic northern circuit, often paired with Lake Manyara and Serengeti, creating a powerful mix of scenery and wildlife.
Highlights
- Excellent chances to see the Big Five in one day, including black rhino.
- Unmatched views from the crater rim overlooking the crater floor.
- High wildlife density with short driving distances between sightings.
- Flamingos, pelicans, and other birdlife around the crater lakes.
- Ideal stop between Lake Manyara / Tarangire and the Serengeti.
Best Time to Visit
- June – October (Dry Season): Great visibility and comfortable temperatures; popular for game viewing.
- November – March: Green season with lush scenery, dramatic skies, and fewer crowds.
- April – May: Wet season with very green landscapes and quieter roads; some days can be rainy but very photogenic.
- Year-round: Because of permanent water and grazing, wildlife stays in the crater all year.
